I love this helmet. I ride an ebike that is very heavy. Its not always safe to go one handed and signal a turn. This allows me to be very predictable to cars. Its also attention grabbing, increasing the chance that a distracted driver might see me.I got into cycling as a hobby a few years ago and now spend most weekend mornings on my bike along with some rides interspersed throughout the week. I started out with a rather plain Bell bike helmet before investing in a nicer helmet from Kask. The Lumos Street is a radical departure from my Kask helmet in both design and features.TLDR version:This is a heavy helmet with cool lighting options that make a rider more visible and likely improves safety. The helmet looks a bit weird and there's a stormtrooper vibe here, which might be a good thing depending on the rider. But my main gripes are a lack of ventilation; overall weight of the helmet; and size (testing the Medium-Large) - it's really not for people with large heads (order the XL!). The proprietary charging cable is an annoyance too.► Setup:From unboxing to riding takes just a few short steps or possibly more, depending on the size of your head. First, I recommend charging the helmet and turn signal with the included cable. You'll notice straight-away that the connector is USB-to-proprietary which is immediately annoying. Why Lumos didn't go with just a ubiquitous USB-C connection, I'm not sure.Next, I recommend mounting the turn signal which is super easy with the included bands and small mounting plate. You'll also want to do a test fit on the helmet and select from two different sized internal pads. The red pads are thicker and for people with smaller heads; green for people with larger heads.Lastly, look for the Lumos app in your favorite app store and download that. Getting everything paired was smooth and the app works well.► Impressions, Fitment, Weight & More:As I said, the medium-large size of this helmet is really designed for people with smaller heads. I have a large head and even with the smaller pads inserted, I'm at the absolute limit of this helmet. So, my wife has been the one using it. We live in a perfect community for this type of helmet where we can walk/bike to a small downtown area with shops and restaurants and a farmers market. My wife has been using this helmet on her short rides and loves the extra visibility and especially the built in accelerometer which engages flashing brake lights on the back of the helmet automatically. She uses the Lumos in addition to both rear and forward-facing bike lights. On my wife, the Lumos Street fits great and she can get a near perfect fit. My wife has complained that the helmet is noticeably heavy, weighing in at 588g (20.7oz)! For short rides it's fine; anything longer and especially when it's hot and the weight and lack of ventilation become an issue.Battery life is really good even when using the front and rear LEDs. Lumos claims 4-10hrs depending on usage and my wife goes several rides in between charging. The turn signal buttons are just about the right size and work instantly. I would be especially careful with where you mount them on your handlebars as you'll want them in an easy to reach spot.► Order this helmet if...:You're cycling in short bursts for a few miles, getting to your destination and relaxing. I would definitely not recommend using the Lumos Street on any type of long ride just based on weight alone. The short summary: very cool helmet, definitely makes you more visible, battery seems like it will make it to 4 hours as advertised, a little heavy, nice app and features, but expensive.I first have to start off by saying that despite requesting the Lumos Street helmet, which doesn't have the matrix of LEDs on the back, I received a Lumos Matrix helmet, which does (and costs more than the Street). This did have a sticker over the UPC labeling it a Street helmet. My general impression for how it looks -- cool and futuristic. The sleek white shiny plastic combined with the vents and the molded lines give it a very cool look. This helmet has lights in the front and back. The front lights are white, with orange LEDs for the turn signals. You can configure the brightness and flashing pattern (or have them be solidly on) in the phone app. The front light is bright enough to be visible, but not good enough to provide any illumination of the road, so you'll still need a bike light. The rear matrix of LEDs can be various colors and can show various shapes and colors. You can select different designs from a library, again from the app, and for each design, some configuration options are provided such as the color. Although the ad copy makes it sound like you can make your own designs, you can't. The rear light is plenty bright to be seen; combined with the height (being on your head) plus any animation you select, I can't imagine anybody not seeing you.I have a fairly large head and try to get XL sized helmets, so I was a bit concerned this might not fit, but my head circumference (23.5") was within the listed size, so I gave it a shot -- it fits pretty well in fact. This ships with a thicker set of pads installed, and it comes with a slightly thinner set of pads for bigger heads. I mixed and matched the pads to get what I thought was a good fit. For the strap adjustments, the left side strap is anchored separately from the right side, meaning you can't adjust the length. You can adjust the relative lengths front to back, with a nice folding clip thing to allow you to adjust where the front and back straps come together. The right side has the same adjustment for the front/back lengths and also allows you to adjust the strap length through the buckle.A remote is included to activate the turn signals; a small mount and silicone bands are provided to mount it to your handlebars. I find that i have to remove the bands to take out the remote to charge, but I don't think that's the intent. The buttons on the remote are backlit so you know when you push them. You can also use your phone to activate the turn signals in the app, but that seems less safe than the remote. The remote was dead (0%) when I first got it, but after charging it once, the remote battery seems quite good. There is only a single charging cable included; this uses a proprietary magnetic charger that only works one way (there's a small notch to indicate the right direction, but it's a bit subtle). The cable is braided but thin. It takes probably 3 hours to charge it from empty. My own experience with battery life has been 15% for a 30 minute ride, which lines up pretty well with the 4 hours claimed by the Lumos. So is this worth $200 or $250? If you just care about visibility, you can find some lights to stick onto a normal helmet and it would work as well. Sure you'd be giving up the matrix display in the rear, but I don't know that you need fancy animation and color if you're only concerned about visibility. Still, given how it looks, the turn signals and customization options, I think it's OK. For the price, I would have liked to see MIPS standard, and I wish there was a way to make your own matrix designs.
