I currently have the lightweight aluminum studs on my tire and studs are actually pointed spikes that really grip the ice. These replacements have flattened studs encased in a steel housing. Definitely heavier, but as I pull them out and reinsert them, the aluminum casing gets damaged and the pointed studs fall out of the casing. These steel encased studs do not, they can be removed and replaced when needed without damaging the housing. I feel the added weight is worth the durability. When the snow melts, instead of swapping out the tire, I just remove the middle row of studs then replace them when it snows again.
