Let me begin by saying that I am a rather new mountain biker, and these were my first ever pair of clipless pedals. (Yes, I had NEVER worn clipless before).I ordered these after doing a TON of research, I mean... A TON. And it paid off.My first ride:I had them installed and took them on the first ride. I admit, it was a very awkward feeling to be "attached" to the bike. I had some difficulties locking in, locking out (Twisting your foot) was easy and almost felt natural. I was not sure about them.My second ride:Same trail... I felt like I had used these for an eternity, they felt perfectly natural and I did feel a lot more confident> I felt like I was able to crank out more power after I discovered I could "Pull on your way up" at the same time as I was pushing. It also gave me more confidence during jumps. Locking in and out started becoming 2nd nature. I loved them. The more I used them, the more I liked them, the only thing I was terrified about was crashing in them while clipped.... it happened. Some fool was coming the wrong way on the trail, and I had to slam my brakes to avoid hitting him.... I went over the bars, as I was flying through the air I just 'knew... there goes at least one of my ankles". I landed after doing a flip, and still had time to see my bike flying across the air... WITHOUT MY FEET! ... I had somehow managed to unclip both of my feet off the bike while flying off of it. And I am pretty sure it wasn't me.Not ONCE had I ever gotten 'unclipped' by mistake while riding, but I was SO glad to see that bike flying away without having me entangled with it. Yes, I did fracture my wrist and my elbow, but my feet were fine.As a newbie, I can only recommend these! Give them a try, you will love them!... I bought another pair for my other bike :PPlease hit "YES" If this helped you make a decision!I thought it would be a really good idea to have one sided clips in case I need to commute to work or ride somewhere wearing my regular shoes, and since I already had Crank Brothers candies on my other two bikes and shoes with corresponding cleats for it, I decided to install these on my commuter bike. Candies that I own are really good pedals, easy to clip on and off, so my decision to get these double shots for my commuter bike was driven by the positive experience with Crank Brothers brand. However these double shots were a little disappointing for several reasons.First what's good: These pedals are nice looking, they offer clip-in side with all the benefits of the clipless pedal, and platform side for riding wearing regular shoes. It's relatively lightweight. Build quality is good, feels very solid and would probably last long. Now what's not so good: First, probably because of the fixed design of the clipping mechanism on one side of the pedal it is hard to clip off. The angle of release is nothing close to 15 degrees stated in the manual. I would say it's more than 30 which makes it really dangerous. I'm wearing my same shoes with the same cleats to ride candies and double shots and the difference of the release angle is just nothing to compare, it's much more wider. You can see on the picture, I almost twisted my leg to 45-50 degrees and were still clipped to the pedal, and it's the same on both sides, this is a significant design flaw as my cleats are installed with dots on the right foot to decrease the release angle. For some reason it works fine with my other two candy pedals but not with this pair.Second con, because the surface of the pedal is much bigger it is much harder to feel the center of the pedal and clip-in without necessarily looking on the pedal. I found myself struggling by sliding my foot back and forth trying to find the clip and engage with it. This almost destroyed my cleats within a week.Third con, the flat surface is too smooth, almost no grip for a regular shoe and when I'm riding up the hill under heavier load my foot sometimes would slip off the pedal.Overall, although I would recommend Crank Brothers egg beaters and candies, I wound NOT recommend these doubles shots to anyone.I needed a good multipurpose pedal for my road bike. I like to take it on longer, more difficult rides where a clip-in is desired, but I also ride it around with the kids where the clips are not desired. This pedal is perfect for both situations. The platform is the perfect size for riding in tennis shoes or flip flops, but not so big that it gets in the way.The clip in takes a little more focus since the clips are only on one side, but with a little practice it's easily mastered. The clips were a little stiff at first, but loosened up after a few uses. The pedal is very well made and durable. They might even outlast my bike. This is a very versatile pedal if you plan to use your bike for both leisure and exercise. I highly recommend it.I bought one set for my 'go everywhere' bike and liked them enough to buy a second set for my single speed. This pedal is well balanced. It's not as easy to get in & out of as a true beater-type pedal, but it's a good compromise for those wanting to use their regular shoes, and still have a great clip-in pedal when they need it. They have the same fantastic float that got me to start using CB back in the day. These are great quality, easy to install, and are very functional. But they are heavy, and can be awkward while riding. I end up paying too much attention to flipping the pedal to get clipped in, or not when I'm not wearing my cycling shoes. Good for a casual rider, but when I upgrade my bike to ride more I'll probably just go with one or the other.Good but not great. The 'flat' side could offer (a lot) more grip -- the grip nubs are just little rounded bumps that are powdercoated over, so they are quite slippery. If you're just puttering around town then these are just fine, but if I need to click out on a trail then the lack of grip from the flat side really saps my confidence, it feels like I'm walking on ice.
